This week, a petition was circulating about Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie. The petition was encouraging the creators of the show to marry the two best friends. However, the Sesame family stated that even though the two puppets have shared living space with each for over 40 years, they aren't gay and were created to teach tolerance.
They even posted a message on facebook, stating:
"Bert and Ernie are best friends.... They were created to teach preschooler that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though the are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics... they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."
